2008 Captain Denis Gavaghan

Denis has suffered a serious illness in recent years and has made an excellent

recovery to enable him to play golf again. All the seniors wish him all the best

in his year as Seniors Captain.

The Seniors section of the club is very active, playing 14 local clubs on a home and away basis

This is the result of the foresight of Fred Waywell in the 1990,s getting the club to join the local

group. We play Bury in the south, Colne in the east and Fishwick in the west, plus the majority of

our neighbours. This is the most civilised way of playing golf, very competitive four balls, good

companionship, excellent courses and good food. During the 2007 season we suffered just one

home defeat, however our away form was not too good, nevertheless enjoyed by all. Accrington

teams are selected by ballot and not on a must win basis. Players named as reserves are given

priority for the next game, ensuring everyone gets equal home and away games.

The George Schofield Memorial Trophy, which is a replica of the Open Claret Jug, was

donated by his family and is a very prized trophy amongst the Senior ranks. Peter Schofield

donates the individual prizes every year and this year provided the club with an Honour Board.

Eric Foster was the first winner and Jack Maddox won the trophy for the following four years.

Since then no one has successfully defended  a win. Jack Rimmer  won the 2007 competition.
