Keith was Chief engineer for a local chemical factory for 26 years, and on his retirement at the age of 65 decided to take up golf. He got the bug following a few rounds with the company golf society. He is the father in law of a previous Accrington GC Captain, Ian Byrom. For his 65th birthday the family secretly bought him his membership for Accrington GC. Despite living very close to another local club, he is very happy at Accrington. He enjoys the friendly atmosphere amongst the members, especially the Seniors Section for whom he has played for several seasons. A very reliable member who will be a worthy Captain of the Senior team in 2012. |
The Seniors Section is very active, playing 14 local clubs on a home and away basis. The friendly league was set up largely due to the foresight of Fred Waywell in the 1990’s getting the Club to join a local group. The league is from Bury in the South, Colne in the East and Fishwick in the West and includes most of the neighbouring Clubs. A very civilised method of playing golf, competitive fourballs, good companionship, excellent courses, good food and all for relatively little cost (£6 at home and £8 away)

The George Schofield Memorial Trophy, which is a replica of the famous Claret Jug, was donated by his family and is a much prized Trophy to win. Peter Schofield, attended the 2011 presentation with his family. He donates the prizes each year and the first winner was Eric Foster and Jack Maddox won the Trophy for the following four years. No one has successfully defended the title since. Steve Shorrock won the 2011 competition.
The Seniors Knockout comps are very popular and very competitive. In 2009 a new trophy was on offer for the Doubles. It was very generously donated by the daughter of Jack Maddox who incidentally lives in Canada. She wanted her fathers memory to live on at the Club and henceforth the Jack Maddox Memorial Trophy will be the prize for the winners. Bob Bell & Ray Haworth were the 2011 Doubles KO winners.
The 2011 John Burke Memorial Trophy final was won by Trevor Bowes, ensuring a new name went on the Trophy after three successful years by Ken Boland. Trevor beat Gwyn Robinson in a tightly contested final.
