Everyone is encouraged and welcomed to join the committee each year.
Accrington Golf Club is an excellent friendly club and equally excellent 18 hole course in a lovely setting with stunning views across to the Ribble Valley. The Ladies section is warm, friendly, thriving and very active. We have 50 members across the various categories and a good mix of low, medium and higher handicappers. These include 2 single figure handicappers. We are a very competitive club, and are pleased to have sufficient players who want to play competitively, whilst also recognising the place for less competitive players and social golfers.
We play in numerous external Lancashire, East Lancashire and Manchester & District and National competitions. We have had an excellent degree of success over the years. In October 2015, the ladies got through to the Grand finals of the National Mail on Sunday Competitions in Spain and came a very creditable 4th out of an original field of over 3000 clubs. In 2016 the club won the prestigious Lancashire Handicap Shield trophy for the first time since it was introduced in 1928.
The main competitions we enter include:
- Lancashire Handicap and Bronze Teams
- National Daily Mail Foursomes Knockout
- Manchester & District Bell Cup
- East Lancashire Scratch & Worsley trophy
- Lancashire Interclub Trophy
- National PING championships
Our Ladies competition day is Tuesday, although early and late in the golf calendar we play at weekends and several others during the summer months. We also have our Lady Captain’s & Lady President’s day at weekend. We have a full and varied programme of competitions throughout the year. We play qualifying competitions from April to mid October. We also have a winter league from October to March playing on both Tuesdays and Weekends. The club also run several Open Ladies and Mixed competitions. See the separate page for the full list and entry conditions. Booking is through the BRS online booking system, Pro Shop or through the General Manager in the office.
The Golf club has a very busy and varied social scene throughout the year. The Ladies section is heavily involved eg Spring Fayre Family Fun Day, Fashion Shows, Woman’s Evenings, Charity Evening, Xmas Parties, Xmas Fayre, Annual Dinner, Quizzes etc. These are all very well attended, excellent days/nights. In addition Lady Captain and Lady President’s days are always followed by a social with live entertainment. We welcome and encourage all types of new members to join on a variety of deals. Various initiatives are ongoing – Golf Express (for all categories) and Get into Golf specifically designed for Ladies. James Braid Connection
A well known golfer in the 1920’s and course designer of many prestige courses, James Braid designed the Accrington course in 1928.We are very honoured to have as a Lady member, Lil Dykes (Lady Captain Elect 2018), the great grand-daughter of James Braid. She is an excellent golfer who only took up the game 10 years ago in her later years, after a successful international athletics career. Lil’s handicap is now down to 10. Watch this space –it must be in the genes!
